I have just submitted a paper to an ACS journal. It was not clear to me that signing the copyright transfer agreement was consistent with the HEFCE open access policy so I e-mailed info@openaccess.cam.ac.uk late one afternoon and got a response early the next morning, advising on the right process. I had to get written confirmation from the editor of the journal that posting the article on the institutional repository with an appropriate embargo was acceptable, and there was some correspondence about this. The ACS editor provided written approval, but not immediately. I have now uploaded our final version of the manuscript to the openaccess website (the version the journal accepted, but without any formatting or sub-editing from the ACS). This should meet the HEFCE openaccess policy, and cost nothing. The research was industrially funded and so not eligible for support from the university's research council open access fund.

Has anyone else had success with the ACS?
