The SuSE 10.1 workstation image is rolled out and working; it's time to start worrying about 10.2
Improvements in 10.2
- LDAP support: your password is your LDAP password, so it's the same on all the workstations that you have an account on. Also makes it much easier to give people accounts on each other's workstations quickly and use Unix groups for access control.
- The usual updated application software
- Vastly improved patching system- no longer will the parse-metadata process hog the cpu once a day
Packages to be dropped
- Mathematica 5.2 - produces very odd error messages; 6.0 will be installed instead
- numarray - even the numarray people say 'do not use this code'; does anyone here really still need it?
- PGI 6.x - no choice, not supported in 10.2.
Proposed new supported packages
