Long term Visitors
Visitors who stay for more than six months will be treated as ordinary members of staff: Sue and Catherine need to know all details two months in advance. This should include arrival and departure dates, which must be precise. If exact dates aren't known then please give the earliest date they may arrive and the latest they will leave. Catherine also needs to know the following: their full name, sex, title, date of birth, any College affiliation and any previous Cambridge user identifier. This information is used to set up UCS computer accounts in advance and is also needed for any new member of staff.
Short term visitors
People staying for less than six months. Please let Sue and Catherine know at least a week in advance so that we can assign desks, with precise dates. If the dates are not precise then give us the earliest possible start and the latest possible end date. It is not always possible to find a spare desk.
By default we provide the following:
- Basic Linux desktop computer, not backed up, whose hard drive will be wiped when the visitor leaves. The machine will be capable of web browsing and reading email, but may not be up to serious computation.
- Open access wireless network for wireless-enabled laptops. This is provided by a commercial ISP and is a separate network from the academic wired and wireless networks (nb strictly speaking we don't have this yet because although the network's in and working we're not running it as a service, but we will be in a few days!)
If asked in advance, we can also provide:
- wired network connection for laptops under some circumstances. If this will be required please ask the visitor to email Catherine and Sue at least a week in advance with the request and a statement that:
- The laptop is up to date with security patches
- All user accounts on the laptop have strong passwords
- All software on the laptop is properly licenced
- The visitor agrees to obey the network rules linked from http://www-co.ch.cam.ac.uk/network/network-commandments.html
- Accounts on local clusters/bastion host/PWF/University mail system/Raven. In order to have any of these the visitor must be assigned a CRSID by the University Computing Service so this is only appropriate for people who are staying at least six weeks. Please let Sue and Catherine know at least a week in advance which accounts are needed and provide full name, sex, title, date of birth, any college, and any previous Cambridge user identifier.
